Director Manigandan, an associate of late cinematographer-director Jeeva, is eagerly waiting to announce the date of the audio launch of his film Chikku Bukku. “I didn’t want to meet the press or the public without completing the movie. So, I thought the audio release function of Chikku Bukku, which is to be held sometime between July 10 and 15, will be an ideal occasion to meet them both. Hariharan and Leslie Lewis have composed the tracks for the film and they are sure to be a hit,” begins Manigandan.
Manigandan was an associate of Jeeva and has been with him since his 12B times. In fact, he completed Jeeva’s final project Dhaam Dhoom after his sudden demise. “Jeeva is my guru. I learnt the art of making movies from him and all my future films will reflect his style of filmmaking,” he states.
So, how did Chikku Bukku happen? “After completing Dhaam Dhoom, I took a break and decided to venture out on my own. I had this script in my mind for almost six years and approached the producers of Dhaam Dhoom. They loved it,” he says.
The film has Arya playing Arjun, a chocolate boy who can make girls’ hearts flutter, and Shriya playing Anu, a bubbly girl. Manigandan says, “The movie is a travelogue of two people. It starts in London and ends in Karaikudi. It’s a breezy love story. There are no oppositions from the lead pair’s family. Instead, Arya and Shriya create problems for each other.”
Ask him why he named his film Chikku Bukku and Manigandan says, “Train is an integral part of my story. Arya and Shriya meet in a train, propose in a train, fight, and split from each other in a train. They are the two rails of my story track.” He adds, “Chikku Bukku is not an exaggeration. It will strike a chord with the audience.”
Manigandan also says that Arya and Shriya were his first choice for this flick. “I knew Arya from the time he did Ullam Ketkume. He has done a peppy hip hop number for this film, which will just blow you away. He has even dubbed for himself. And, Shriya is herself in the film – young and vivacious!” he says.
Preetika, sister of Bollywood actress Amrita Rao, makes her debut with this film. “Preetika’s role is a surprise element,” he says and reveals that he had earlier approached Vidya Balan to play this role. “But Vidya had prior commitments. She had to complete three movies and we didn’t have time to wait for her. I was looking for a homely face to do the role and Preetika fit the bill,” he explains.
While 30 per cent of the film was shot in London by cameraman R B Gurudev (of Yogi fame), the rest was shot in Mysore, Coonoor and Karaikudi. “In fact, I first wanted to make this a city-based script. But then, I thought it would be nice if the script travelled along places,” he says.
Even before Chikku Bukku hits the screens (in the second week of August), Manigandan is ready with a script for his next venture. “It will be a romantic action film,” he signs off.
